Cigarette Girl follows three brothers--Lebas, Karim, and Tegar, heirs to the Djagad Raja Clove Cigarettes, as they embark on a quest to fulfill their father’s dying wish: find Jeng Yah, the mysterious woman he has been calling out to on his deathbed. With the little clues they have, the brothers travel across Java, delving into its secrets to locate Jeng Yah.
Cigarette Girl traces the growth of a clove cigarette enterprise from its humble beginnings in the Dutch East Indies during the early 1940s and acquaints readers with the history of Indonesia through the lens of clove cigarettes and unrequited love.
About the Author
Ratih Kumala was born in Jakarta on June 4, 1980. She finished her studies in Sebalas Maret University of Surakarta-Indonesia and majored in English Literature. She is the author of six books; Tabula Rasa (novel), Genesis (novel), Larutan Senja (collected fiction), Kronik Be-tawi (novel), Gadis Kretek (novel) and Bastian dan Jamur Ajaib (short stories collection). Apart from novels, Ratih Kumala has also written screenplays. She lives in Jakarta with her husband, Eka Kurniawan, and their daughter Kidung Kinanti Kurniawan.
