This folktale introduces children to major mountains and other sites in the Philippines through the spirits of each of these geographical locations. In the form of strong, beautiful women and imposing men, they playfully interact with the hardworking protagonist, Oke, and send him on his way home. In a Rip Van Winkle-like twist, he finds he is now in the future. Having been unexpectedly given immortal life, he is believed to have become the guardian of the mountains.
 
The story is appropriate reading educational for young kids ages 9 to 12.

Christine S. Bellen-Ang is an assistant professor at Ateneo de Manila University specializing in Children's literature. She won the Catholic Mass Media Award for Children's Book in 2010 and the Filipino Reader's Choice Award in 2013 for her book Mga Kuwento ni Lola Basyang.
